Mountain Snow Update

Here's a look at the latest snow totals available from the mountains. Since it is tough to get snow reports during the middle of the night and early in the morning, most of these reports were as of Wednesday evening. Some of these locations likely have higher snow totals this morning since some spots of the mountains have seen snow showers overnight --
  • Mt. Leconte, TN: 17"
  • Robbinsville: 16"
  • Newfound Gap: 12"
  • Beech Mountain: 8"
  • Haywood County (17 miles NE of Waynesville): 7"
  • Boone: 3.5"
  • Maggie Valley: 3"
  • Weaverville: 3"
  • Asheville: 0.8"

I'd like to know where they measure the snow in Waynesville because the most, and I mean M-O-S-T, snow I saw in one place in Waynesville was only about an inch... if that. I do know that some areas of Haywood County got heavier snowfall amounts, but not in Waynesville.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for checking visiting our blog. I just took a look at some of the final snow totals from this week's mountain snow. Reports from the National Weather Service Office of Greenville-Spartanburg showed a report listed as Waynesville having 7" of snow. However, that reporting site is actually 17 miles northeast of Waynesville. A report in the city of Waynesville shows only 0.5" snow while a third report listed as Waynesville but actually 10 miles north of town has 3". As you know, a few miles in the mountains can make a big difference in snow accumulation.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll update the post with the correct location.
